It's The Holiday Season...

The holidays are my favorite time of year. Anyone who knows me knows that I love Christmas and fully believe that the spirit that comes with it is the closest thing we have to magic. Today we are decorating our Christmas tree that we got from the Murray Hill Farm in Waterbury, and I am so excited. Even though we have two grinches in our family, my mom and I always enjoy sprucing up the tree.

I know that I am not the only one who is in love with the holidays, but I also know that for so many people the holidays are an extremely tough time of year. Whether it's due to the hard economic times, family troubles, or whatever may be happening, sometimes life just gets in the way of enjoying even the most wonderful times. But, for those moments that get you down-- like when the song that reminds you of someone you lost comes on the radio, or when you just can't seem to make ends meet, or even those times when you literally think you've lost all faith in humanity... there are loads of amazing things that can really turn your day around. You've just got to be willing to look for them.

Scrolling through my Facebook news feed today, I saw that a friend of mine had shared a Youtube video of the WestJet Christmas Miracle. WestJet is an airline based in Calgary, and my oh my did they spread some holiday cheer. Watching this video made me tear up. It's honestly amazing how even the smallest good deed can make someone's day. If you have an extra five minutes to spare, definitely check this video out. There really is nothing like it.

I'm always thinking that I should be more generous with giving back to the community. So many people make monetary donations or participate in food drives, which is amazing. However, what a lot of local communities need is time. I volunteered a lot throughout high school, and it's one of the best things I feel I could have done for myself. I've really slacked off in the past couple of years, but the fact of the matter is giving back to your community isn't that difficult. One day of your time, a few hours even, can make a world of difference for local organizations--especially around the holidays. A goal of mine this holiday season is to give back to the community in some way. I've listed a few opportunities in the Burlington area that would be great to do with a small group of friends!
